Catalog search

See what customers searched for in your catalog, find searches that came back empty, and tune how results are ranked.

Catalog search is only available to companies with the commerce capability. It has two tabs. Analytics shows what customers searched for and what they didn't find. Ranking profile is where you decide how search results are ordered.

What you see

On the Analytics tab:

  • Range picker in the top right: 24h, 7d or 30d. The default is 7 days.
  • Four numbers: Searches, Distinct queries, Found nothing (the share of searches with no results) and Empty queries (how many different searches came back empty).
  • How searches were answered: how many searches each match type answered, from strongest to weakest: Exact SKU, Exact name, Phrase, All words, Most words, Description, Typo-tolerant and Partial. Description and Typo-tolerant are marked as "rescued", because they found results a stronger match type missed.
  • Came back empty: the searches that found nothing, with how often each one was made. Treat it as a to-do list for your catalog.
  • Most searched: the top searches, with how often each was made and how many results it returned.

On the Ranking profile tab:

  • Ranking weights: six sliders from 0 to 100.
  • Push mode, Pushed SKUs, Hidden SKUs and Synonyms.
  • A save bar with the published and draft versions.
  • Why these results on the right, where you can try a search.

How to change the ranking

  1. Open the Ranking profile tab.
  2. Under Ranking weights, move the sliders: Text relevance, Freshness (new in), Promotion, Best seller, Pushed products and In stock. A higher value gives that factor more weight.
  3. Choose a Push mode:
    • Balanced keeps the best text match on top.
    • Push first lets the score alone decide the order.
  4. Click Save draft to keep your changes without affecting customers, or Publish to make them live.

How to push or hide products

  1. Under Pushed SKUs, add the SKUs you want to move up. The order matters: the first one is pushed hardest.
  2. Under Hidden SKUs, add the SKUs that should never appear in results.
  3. Click Save draft or Publish.

How to add synonyms

  1. Under Synonyms, enter the word a customer types in the left box (they type…).
  2. Enter the word to search for instead in the right box (search for…).
  3. Click Save draft or Publish.

Synonyms match whole words only. Phrases work too.

How to test the ranking before you publish

  1. In Why these results, type a search in Search the catalog….
  2. Click Rank or press Enter.
  3. You see the top results ranked with your current settings, including changes you haven't published. Each result shows its rank, its match type, its score, and a bar showing how much each factor added.
  4. If a result moved because of your changes, it says where it was on the published profile, for example "was #3 on the published profile".

If nothing matches, the customer sees the empty-search fallback set on the Assistant page.

Good to know

  • The save bar shows the live version (or "never published"), any draft version, and whether you have unsaved changes.
  • Click Discard draft to throw away a saved draft.
  • Pushed SKUs and Hidden SKUs hold up to 60 entries each. Synonyms hold up to 200.
  • Search analytics keep only the search text, never who searched.
